I guess I should outline what this Blog is going to be about.
I like to think of myself as a musician. Over the years I have been involved in various musical projects (bands etc.) but of late I have become jaded with that approach. What interests me now is using creative sampling techniques to create musical collages.
This covers audio genres such as cut up, musique concrete, found sound, field recordings, 'sound art' and so on. However, I am interested in using these methods to create something listenable (or at least what I consider listenable!) as opposed to something wholly or deliberately abstract.
Whether I actually ever finish any 'songs' or 'pieces' is not really the point. For me, enjoying the creative process is as much my purpose as having something to show for my effort. Which is where this Blog comes in.
This Blog will track my efforts to find sounds for my compositions. This could be me writing about a piece of old vinyl I've found to sample from. Or it could be me telling you about where I went to make my own recording of something. Or how something has inspired me. I will, of course, then write about how I am using those sounds and post the finished 'tracks' on My Space or something similar.
I should mention now that in terms of 'sampling' I am not interested in using breaks etc. from well known recordings. I am looking for sounds that YOU, the listener, may not have heard before.
I hope you'll enjoy this journey almost as much as I will.
